RJD to Hold ‘Lok Bhawan March’ in Patna Over Student Issues and Siwan Firing

Published: August 18, 2026

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) will hold a ‘Lok Bhawan March’ in Patna on August 19, highlighting concerns related to paper leaks, unemployment, recruitment irregularities and the state of Bihar’s education system.

The alleged use of an AK-47 by a policeman during a student protest in Siwan has become a major point of confrontation between the RJD and the Bihar government. The incident took place on July 25, when Constable Abhishek Kumar was accused of opening fire with an AK-47 during a student protest.

Following the controversy, Siwan Superintendent of Police Puran Kumar Jha suspended the constable. However, RJD leader and Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav has argued that action against the constable alone is insufficient. He has also questioned the responsibility of senior officials, including the district police chief.

The RJD is demanding a broader investigation into the incident and accountability for all officials found responsible. The party is linking the Siwan controversy with wider concerns among Bihar’s students and young people over examination irregularities, recruitment processes and unemployment.

RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav has also criticised the government, alleging that students and young people are facing distress because of paper leaks, a deteriorating education system, alleged bias in recruitment and a lack of employment opportunities.

Posters announcing the march have appeared across Patna, including at the RJD state headquarters. With the party mobilising its legislators, MPs and workers, the protest is expected to lead to another major confrontation between the Opposition and the NDA government in Bihar.
